Kiteboarding is a fusion of wind and board sports that opens a world of possibilities. All you need is wind, a kite, and a board – any board.
Toss your kite into the wind and you can use it to pull you around, much like a boat except that you're in control.
It doesn’t matter if you want to kiteboard on a lake, kitesurf at your favorite surf break, or snowkite up a mountain, it’s all possible.
It’s easy to understand why this sport is becoming so popular. It can be adapted to your own style and personality, and it doesn’t matter where you live; as long as you have wind you are in business!
KiteboardingEvolution.com is intended to be a learning resource for you!
All of this information comes from my experience as a kiteboarder, as well as the experience of many others.
We have all evolved to where we are now through all sorts of trial and error, and that experience is shared on these pages. It is my hope that you use this site to learn, so you may experience the addictive highs of kiteboarding, while minimizing the lows.
Of course, your experience matters! If you know some tip, trick, or technique that will benefit others, contact me and share it.
Please Note – You cannot learn to kiteboard exclusively from this website. This site is not intended to replace the personalized teachings (and corrections) that a professional instructor provides during lessons. Lessons are highly recommended when learning any new sport, especially kiteboarding.
As a kid, I always wanted to fly. Mainly, I wanted to be a space-shuttle pilot or a fighter pilot. I had even considered flying commercial jets, helicopters, and hang-gliders, but what I really wanted was my own personal flying machine. I wanted to be able to fly at will, like a bird. The one thing I didn’t expect was where I was going to get my flying fix.
One of the first times I realized that I could fly with a kite was when I was flying my trainer in a field. I noticed that if I flew the kite in a certain pattern it started to pull me up. This feeling intrigued me, so I began experimenting. It took about 10 minutes for me to figure out what made the kite pull up, and soon after that, I flew.
The kite rose and pulled me about 10 feet into the air. As I was pulled up I remember thinking “Oh my god, I’m flying!” The next thing I remember thinking was “Oh Sh*%, how do I get down?” I came down rather un-gracefully, but it didn’t matter, I was hooked.
I survived my first flight unharmed, and was left afterwards with two feelings. The first was excitement. The fact that I could kiteboard and catch huge air was a dream come true. The second feeling was concern. I realized that if a small trainer kite (3.6m2) had the power to lift me off the ground, then a real kiteboarding kite has the potential to be extremely dangerous. I knew that I had to approach this sport properly or I could really get hurt. It was this feeling of concern that spurred the research, learning, and experience that made this site possible.
